Is the PureWick™ System covered by Medicare?
Purewickathome.com, operated by C. R. Bard, Inc., is neither a Medicare or Medicaid enrolled or participating supplier, nor participating with any commercial insurance plans and will not submit claims or collect reimbursement for orders placed on this website. Items sold are not covered by Medicare or Medicaid and are cash sales only. Even if you are Medicare or Medicaid beneficiary, or have commercial insurance, you will be personally and fully responsible for payment for any items purchased.
What is the PureWick™ System?
The PureWick™ System is an innovative system that is intended for non-invasive management of urine output in female patients. The PureWick™ System is comprised of two devices: the PureWick™ Female External Catheter which captures urine that is drawn away by the PureWick™ Urine Collection System.
Who should use the PureWick™ System?
The PureWick™ System is intended for use by female patients/users for non-invasive urine output management.
Who should not use the PureWick™ System?
Agitated, combative, or uncooperative patients/users that might remove the PureWick™ Female External Catheter; Patients/users that have frequent episodes of bowel incontinence; Patients/users experiencing skin irritation or breakdown at the site (vaginal area); Patients/users experiencing moderate/heavy menstruation and cannot use a tampon; Patients/users with urinary retention
Is the PureWick™ Female External Catheter reusable?
No, it is a single-use device that should be replaced at least every 8 to 12 hours, or immediately if soiled with blood or feces.
Can my patients sanitize and reuse their PureWick™ Female External Catheters?
No. The PureWick™ Female External Catheter (FEC) is designed for single-use only. Attempting to wash, sanitize, and/or reuse the FEC may contribute to a risk of infection or illness, and may compromise the structural integrity and materials of the wick. This could contribute to device failure and user injury.
How much suction is coming from the PureWick™ Urine Collection System?
Approximately 120 mmHg to 140 mmHg.
How often do you need to replace the canister and tubing?
The canister and tubing should be replaced every 60 days or sooner if you see signs of degradation.

My patient is experiencing leakage with the PureWick™ Female External Catheter. How do I prevent it from leaking?
Ensure accurate positioning of the device. With soft gauze side facing patient, align distal end of the PureWick™ Female External Catheter at gluteal cleft. Gently tuck soft gauze side between separated gluteus and labia. Ensure that the top of the gauze is aligned with the pubic bone. Slowly place legs back together once the PureWick™ Female External Catheter is positioned. After confirming proper positioning, check the PureWick™ Urine Collection System’s suction to ensure it is functioning properly. What’s the recommendation for cleaning the PureWick™ Urine Collection System and the accessories?
The PureWick™ Urine Collection System and accessories should be cleaned and disinfected at the time of each use, or at a minimum, daily. Detailed instructions on cleaning and disinfection are outlined in the PureWick™ Urine Collection System User Guide.

Can patients wear underwear?
Yes, mesh underwear similar to what is used in Labor and Delivery Wards can be worn. In fact, mesh underwear may help secure the product for some patients/users.
